Authentic Engineering Problems in Service Mathematics Assignments: Principles, Processes and Products from Twenty Years of Task Design

A central problem in undergraduate mathematics education for future engineers consists the perceived and actual relevance of mathematical content. One strategy to strengthen both is let students experience how that content appears posing solving authentic problems from field engineering which have signed up study. This paper proposes a way develop such strategy, terms theoretical precision (e.g. clarify what “authentic” could mean this context), institutional epistemological conditions constraints realizing strategy. The based on cases formats developed over twenty years at Technical University Denmark.
